Macallè Sicilian bistrot

The restaurant was recommended in an on line Forbes guide. Not one I usually use so was a little skeptical. However this turned out to be the best meal we had during our time in Sicily. The food here is superb. The chef is a real character and very welcoming. We had octopus on a bed of creamed zucchini for our starter, finished with a theatrical table-side blowtorch caramelisation adding a fantastic depth of flavour to the dish. We then followed with a deconstructed version of Pasta alla Norma (my favourite pasta dish) which was superb. For our mains, we had the stuffed squid and the swordfish. Both incredible. Again with the blowtorch finish. On the night we visited, the restaurant interior was full of a party of visiting musicians who apparently had been coming non stop, noon and night during their three day stay., they liked it so much. We sat at a table outside on the quiet street, away from the hoards of tourists. The terrace and restaurant are quirkily decorated with vintage/retro mid century antiques.

Lovely food and people. It's a beautiful quiet place. We had a great time. Many seafood options. I had the squid to start with and it was lovely, soft but not mushy. The steaky dish is also really tender and had some very nice Sicilian flavours. It's not the cheapest place or the most expensive. We wanted to spend a bit more than we usually did as a treat and it was great.

Excellent meal. By far the best meal we have had in Sicily and one of the nicest dinning experiences. I highly recommend the chef's tasting menu of fish courses. It was exceptional.

Lovely restaurant, delicious dinner. Seafood very fresh and well cooked. Interesting and reasonably priced wine list. Delightful staff in stylish surroundings. We hope to come back soon.
